December 31st 2022

As 2022 disappears over the horizon never to be seen again, I thought I'd squeeze in one last update for you all. This time it's Ah Via Musicom, one of my favourite Eric Johnson albums. There's something for almost everyone here, rock n' roll, jazz, pop, fusion and some more things that I can't think of at the moment!

In album order the songs are - Cliffs Of Dover, Desert Rose, High Landrons, Steve's Boogie, Trademark, Nothing Can Keep Me From You, Righteous, Forty Mile Town and Eric's tribute to Jazz master Wes Montgomery; East Wes. Have fun with these tracks and be aware that some of them are deceptively fast.

Remember to bookmark, like the Facebook page, and let everyone know what a great website this is!

I'll be back in '23 with more basslines for you to play along with, so remember...

Just before the clocks strike midnight, raise your left leg. That way you can start the new year on the right foot!! See ya next year.

December 14th 2022

With Christmas fast approaching, I thought I'd upload a few of the xmas pop songs that are most popular here in the UK. They'll fit into anyone's set list quite easily (unless you're an extreme death/black metal band!), and should be guaranteed crowd-pleasers.

In alphabetical order they are:- Do They Know It's Christmas, the Band Aid track that started an avalanche of charity singles for everything from famines to floods, to disease, to... well, you get the picture. Next up is Mike Oldfield's take on the ancient tune In Dulci Jubilo. After that we come to Wizzard's wonderful I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday and Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody which were both released in 1973 and are still on every radio station's playlist today. I read somewhere that Slade get almost £1,000,000 in royalties each year just for that one song! Finally Elton John tells us to Step Into Christmas with a great bassline that'll keep those fingers happy!

More stuff coming soon so remember to like/follow on Facebook and if you haven't already done so, the bookmark the website. No sign-ups, no ads, no annoying cookie popups and no charges - just great basslines for you to download and play along to. See you soon for more low end goodies!

December 10th 2022

Today's upload is an Yngwie Malmsteen one. His best (in my opinion) album - Trilogy. Even if you're not a fan of the Swedish widdle-meister you might find it worth having a look as there are some lovely harmonic minor runs and arpeggios that are great as warm-up/dexterity exercises. The title track, Trilogy Suite, is a massive five pages long and learning it and getting it up to speed should keep you occupied for a while. Back in the late 80s I was playing for about 8 hours a day, 3 rehearsals a week and gigging most weekends so I could play all this stuff, but now it's a struggle to keep up with it all. Maybe one day I'll get back up to that level of speed again. Anyway, there are 9 tracks to play and in album order they are...

You Don't Remember, Liar, Queen In Love, Crying, Fury, Fire, Magic Mirror, Dark Ages and Trilogy Suite.

As usual, remember to bookmark the website and pop over to the Facebook page, give it a like/follow so that you'll be notified when there's more basslines for you to play. As it's December, I might upload some Christmassy hits next time so keep 'em peeled and enjoy your Yngwie album.

December 4th 2022

I've had a little break from the website due to doing a little bit of recording work but I'm back and I've got 11 new songs for you to have a look at.

Last time I promised some Whitesnake and I have the first half of the Slip Of The Tongue album for you. I started transcribing this about 30 years ago and never got around to finishing it but the tracks I did work on are... Slip Of The Tongue, Cheap An' Nasty, Fool For Your Loving, Now You're Gone and Kitten's Got Claws. This is the Am version of Fool For Your Loving as the bass player on this album was Rudy Sarzo so don't get it mixed up with the superior Gm version as played by the great Neil Murray.

I haven't really met Neil Murray but I did briefly bump into him once at a Queen Fan Club Convention. I'd played the Saturday night spot and went backstage to pick up my amp on the Sunday afternoon as he was just getting ready to go on for a soundcheck with, I think, The Red Sox or it may have been the SAS band but it was something that was put together for the convention. After picking my jaw up from the floor I stammered something like, "Wow! Neil Murray!! Love you work.". He looked at me and said "Thanks", walked past me and that was it. Quite an underwhelming story for you maybe, and I doubt very much that he has any recollection of it, but it was a bit of a highlight to me. Anyway, without Neil it ain't Whitesnake so to redress the balance a bit I've included Give Me All Your Love from the 1987 album. Lovely bloke, fantastic bassist and quite an influence on my playing, and if by some miracle he ever gets to read this, Thanks for the great basslines!

Now what other delights are in store for you?... What about some early Annihilator? Alison Hell has been added for all the thrash-y fans. For the Ozzy aficionados we have Killer Of Giants which has a lovely acoustic intro. Queensryche get their first look-in on the site with Best I Can from their Empire album. Steve Vai (who played guitar on the Slip Of The Tongue album) also makes his debut appearance with For The Love Of God and finally Dio rounds off this episode with Hey Angel from Lock Up The Wolves.

I know I always say this but.... As usual, remember to bookmark the website and pop over to the Facebook page, give it a like/follow so that you'll be notified when there's more basslines for you to play. Now, I'm off to see what I can find for next time. See you then.

November 16th 2022

I hope you all enjoyed playing along to Power Windows on the last update, because I've added another Rush album for you to have a go at. This time it's the prog rock masterpiece that is Hemispheres! There are only four tracks on this one, but the first track is over 18 minutes long and the last one clocks in at over 9 minutes so there's plenty for you to do.

Track list order is -

Cygnus X-1 Book II, Circumstances, The Trees and finally the track that's been impressing bass players since 1978... La Villa Strangiato.

As usual, remember to bookmark the website and pop over to the Facebook page, give it a like/follow so that you'll be notified when there's more basslines for you to play. Next time, I'm going to upload some Whitesnake and I'll add a couple of mixed songs so that you can give your fingers a bit of a rest after the Rush stuff.

November 9th 2022

I promised you some Rush and here it is....

The complete set of Geddy's basslines from the album Power Windows, which was released in 1985. These songs are a tad more challenging than the Quo stuff that I put up last time so you'd better warm up a bit before playing them!

The songs (in album order), are -

The Big Money, Grand Designs, Manhattan Project, Marathon, Territories, Middletown Dreams, Emotion Detector and Mystic Rhythms.

Rush have been releasing records since 1974 and their 19th and last studio album was Clockwork Angels in 2012. During the 80s they went through a synth-y phase which some Rush fans weren't too keen on, but this was my favourite era of their work and Power Windows is slap, bang in the middle of this period. I still have another 6½ Rush albums and a double live album to add, so if you like that sort of thing then remember to bookmark the website and pop over to the Facebook page, give it a like/follow and you'll be notified when there's more basslines to play along to. What ya waiting for? Download, tune up and get playing these fantastic basslines from Geddy Lee and I'll see you next time for... what would you like to see? More Rush, Malmsteen, Eric Johnson, Annihilator or a mix of various rock stuff? let me know on bob@bobsbasslines.com or drop a comment on to the Facebook page.

See ya next time.

November 3rd 2022

In the mid 1990s I used to jam around on a Sunday afternoon with a couple of musos and we decided to form a Status Quo band. We couldn't find anyone to sing so it only lasted a few weeks and then we went back to playing Ozzy, Queen, Whitesnake etc. So, here's seven Quo songs for you all to have a play with...

Big Fat Mama, Don't Drive My Car, Down Down, In The Army Now, Mystery Song, Paper Plane and Red Sky.

Nothing too challenging here but the opening to Big Fat Mama might need a bit of working on, and there's a few fluid runs in Down Down that could possibly trip your fingers up. The versions of Mystery Song and Down Down are the single versions (radio edits?) so if you're playing along to the album versions then you'll need to fill in a few gaps. We also did Whatever You Want and Caroline but They're so easy to play that I never transcribed them.

I am aware that there's no Rush on here yet - Next time I'll put that right so make sure that you bookmark the website and pop over to Facebook for a like or follow and you'll see posts about updates to the list of transcriptions.

October 26th 2022

It's time for some more basslines here on bobsbasslines.com, and it's a bit of mixed bag for you. In alphabetical order, we have...

Black Magic Woman (the Santana version), Copperhead Road by good ol' boy Steve Earle, Extreme's Decadence Dance, Rolling Stones' Honky Tonk Women, I Surrender from Rainbow, Jealous Guy (the Roxy Music version), Gary Moore and Phil Lynott join forces for Parisienne Walkways, we go back to 1965 for the Zombies' classic She's Not There, Ozzy joins in the fun with Shot In The Dark and finally we have that old rock cover band favourite Steal Your Fire by Gun.

There you are... another ten songs for you to download and play along to. I've also sorted out the key change at the end of Since You've Been Gone and the missing bars from the first two verses of Garden Party. Don't forget to bookmark the website, and give me a follow or like on the Facebook page so you can find out when new files are uploaded. See you next time for more bob's bassine bonanzas!

October 19th 2022

Ok here's the Marillion that I promised you last time...

Incommunicado, Sugar Mice and Garden Party are already on the Marillion page and now I've added the whole of their first album Script For A Jester's Tear. Tracks on this album are...

Script For A Jester's Tear, He Knows You Know, The Web, Garden Party, Chelsea Monday and Forgotten Sons. For good measure I've thrown in Kayleigh which I had to learn for a fashion show gig

As usual, don't forget to give the Facebook page a Like or Follow in order to keep informed about new additions to the website, and I'll see you next time for more low-end goodness.

October 12th 2022

Twenty-five or so years ago I was in a Queen tribute band and today's additions are all about Queen so here are some of John Deacon's best basslines which I used to play live. There's lots more Queen to come in the future but for now, here's nine tracks to rock out to. Live tracks are Friends Will Be Friends and Tear It Up from the Live At Wembley '86 album, and also the fast version of We Will Rock You from Live Killers. Studio songs are: Good Old Fashioned Loverboy, It's A Hard Life, Save Me, The Show Must Go On, Somebody To Love and Freddie's final video - These Are The Days Of Our Lives.

Remember to follow/like the bobsbasslines Facebook page so you can see when new files are uploaded, and next time I'll have some Marillion for you to play along to.

October 3rd 2022

Here's the latest additions to the website. There's Bad Boys and Lookin' For Love from Whitesnake's self-titled 1987 album, Ozzy's Fire In The Sky and the original Holy Diver from Dio.

Back in the mid 90s I usd to go to a jam night every Monday and a drummer asked if I'd be interested in taking over from the bassist who was leaving his band. I asked for a couple of songs to learn for the audition but he said that rehearsal was the next night, and not to worry because they just do soft rock and blues and I'd breeze it. I turned up the next night to find that I didn't know any of their set, and when I started playing the first song which was a 12 bar that I'd never heard of, they said "What are you doing? It doesn't go like that!". Then their current bass player, who had turned up for the band rehearsal, plugged in and played bass for the rest of the evening while I sat there feeling like a right nob-head! I went away and worked on 5 songs so I could show them that I actually had the ability to be in the band, only to be told a few nights later that my services wouldn't be required! Moral of the story:- never go to an audition unprepared unless you want to look like an idiot! Ever since then I have refused to play with a band unless I have time to work on stuff first, and fuck them for not giving me a proper tryout!!

Anyway, the 5 songs that I worked out for my non-existent re-audition were:- Steamy Windows from Tina Turner. Need Your Love So Bad from the original Fleetwood Mac, Help The Poor and Talk To Your Daughter by blues maestro Robben Ford and Van Morrison's masterpiece Moondance.

September 17th 2022

This week's update is more songs from rock cover bands I was in. Born To Be Wild by Steppenwolf is probably played by everyone at some point, if only at a jam session to have a break from all the 12 bar blues! Beastie Boys' Fight For Your Right is simple to play and a good crowd pleaser as is Rocks from Primal Scream. A bit more difficult to play is Megadeth's In My Darkest Hour which I think is possibly their finest song. This batch is topped off with a Dio track. Wild One opens his Lock Up The Wolves album is would make a great 2nd set opener for a band playing two sets at a pub or bar. As usual, don't forget to give the Facebook page a Like or Follow in order to keep informed about new additions to the website. Keep it low!

September 10th 2022

Just a small addition to the site this week as I've been making a cupboard in the kitchen for our new boiler! I heard Best Years by Whitesnake and immediately wanted it in the band's set as I knew it would go down well and it's great fun to play. Unfortunately we didn't do it justice and it left the set after a couple of gigs. Maybe you'll have more luck with it. Back in the late 80s and early 90s I was in a band that was playing a lot of Sabbath, Ozzy, Dio, Malmsteen etc. so I'm starting to add the songs we did. These songs were all written out in longhand as I didn't have any sort of score writing software at the time. I'm putting them in to my computer but it's a lot of work so they'll take time to convert.

Tracks this time are:- Die Young and Children Of The Sea the first two tracks from Black Sabbath's Heaven And Hell album. Crystal Ball from Yngwie Malmsteen, I Don't Want To Change The World and Bloodbath In Paradise by Ozzy. As previously mentioned; Best Years by Whitesnake. Don't forget to bookmark and keep checking back for the latest additions and/or follow/like the Facebook page to keep yourself informed of when new transcriptions are uploaded.
